CSA's

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. These farms offer “produce subscriptions, where buyers receive a weekly or monthly basket” of whatever products that particular farm grows/makes. Most CSAs farmers have their members pay for the season up-front, but some farmers will accept weekly or monthly payments. The local CSAs are hard to get into. That is good and bad. We need more CSAs, but it is good that the ones we have are getting used! Here is a short list of some of the ones I am familiar with in this area. We are members of the Poplar Ridge Farm co-op. You can email the places to get on a waiting list if there are no spots available. The co-ops run during the harvest months (generally mid-May through August).

Poplar Ridge Farm: This is the farm where Josh and I are members. They use all organic practices and offer all different kinds of produce, herbs and flowers. They also “pass through” some all natural poultry, pork and eggs, meaning they work with other local farmers to provide this to their members at no mark up for Poplar Ridge.

New Towne Farm: This is another GREAT family owned farm right near Poplar Ridge down in Waxhaw, NC. They offer produce and herbs and some poultry and eggs. Sammy also sells his produce at the Matthews Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings and also sells quite a bit to local restaurants.

New Moon Farm: I don’t personally know much about this farm and have not visited it like I have the above two, but it is an organic CSA that is located in Rowan County (in Mt. Ulla, NC). They offer the same as the other two.

The Farmers Fresh Market Initiative is a farm to consumer program based out of Rutherford County (about 70 miles from Charlotte). The project was started to help create business opportunities for local farmers and laid-off factory workers in this very economically distressed county. Individuals and restaurants can shop the virtual, online farmers market (www.farmersfreshmarket.org) and purchase seasonal produce. It is picked within 24 hours of shipment, and delivered fresh to a central drop-off location once a week (there are currently two drop off points in the Charlotte area). The food is fantastic, convenient to order, and the cause is worthy.
